This ride is short at just 40km, but it includes a total elevation gain of 800+ m, making it an excellent workout for your legs.
Doable with any type of bike. Roadies can chose alternatives for the few bits offroad.
The starting point is Turnov’s main train station, which you can easily reach both by train or by car.
If you travel by car, there is a free parking at the lower end of the station building, or in alternative, you can park at the bus station.
Before starting the intensive ride, I recommed a stop at Panorama café in the town centre. They have some excellent chlebíčky and good coffee, even though the prices are very much Prague-like.
Sometimes they allow you to leave the bikes inside, in front of the bar, sometimes you have to leave them outside.
The first part of the ride goes along the Jizera river, following the cycling path n. 17 ‘Greenway Jizera’, where in sunny days you meet many many people cycling, running, walking their dogs, on rollerblades, with kids, etc..
You cycle over a long iron bridge that crosses the river and at the end of it turn right, leaving the path 17 behind you (point 3).
From the crossroad in Rakousy (point 4) starts a nice 2km uphill until the village of Zbirohy – remember to turn right and leave the main road after the first big turn (where is the Betlém, point 5). You can follow the yellow sign that says ‘Zbirohy’.
This is a very steep climb and a nice stretch of road between two hilly forest, with almost zero traffic.
Continue climbing until you first meet the refreshment bar ‘Na Rozcestí’ (namely ‘at the crossroad’, check their fb page for the opening hours – point 6) and then to Besedice, where other two bars wait for you at the top of the hill, with a huge terrace and a variety of food and drinks.
Roll down the hill till the main road in Koberovy, where you ride for just 2 minutes, before leaving it for another climb on your left (point 7).
At the Prosíčka bus stop (point 8) turn right to start a 2km descent that leads you to cross the Jizera again, in Líšný. From here you could easily continue on the main road towards Malá Skála, but a nice off-road path inside the forest is a better choice (point 9).
At the area close to the big parking in Malá Skála you have several options for food & drink and for resting. At the parking itself there is an info centre with a kiosk, and there are also toilets and benches. Closeby there are a gas station, a small grocery store and a semi Mexican-Italian restaurant (I did not like the food they serve).
On the other side of the road and of the river there is a recreational area called Žlutá plovárna with a couple of food kiosks, a beach volley field, toilets, an improvised beach on the river and kayak rental. More inside the Vranové neighborhood there are other few restaurants.
Returning back to the parking, another nice climb starts until the Sokol in Sněhov (point 12). Here, roadies continue on the main road (straight), but you turn left, climbing even more to Bobov first and then, via a wild unpaved stretch, to Kopanina. From this section you have a beautiful view over the valley with huge sandstone rocks and many trees. In clear days you can see the ruins of Trosky castle.
If you still have some energy left, then climb to the Kopanina peak (point 13). You have some views from this hill only if you actually climb the tower itself, as the moltitude of trees completely surrounds the place.
If you intend to visit the tower, its keys can be taken from the family living in the house n. 258 (the second house as you come out of the trail – link https://mapy.com/s/gulorujuba). The deposit for the keys is 100kč and the entry to the tower is 20 kč per person.
The restaurant ‘Chata Kopanina’ at the crossroad does not work anymore for public. They only open for private events, rentals or for people who stay overnight. But they installed a self-service kiosk, where you can get drinks and snacks and leave the corresponding amount in a box. You can also tap your beer or lemonade!
The climbs are over and from Kopanina it is a beautiful 13km downhill ride back to Turnov. After around 9km of descent, you join the Jizera again at the Dolánky campsite (point 15) and cycle back the same path from the morning until the train station or the car park.
If you want to grab some food or drink last minute, there is a Billa supermarket on the main road close to the station.
Don’t act so surprised, Your Highness. You weren’t on any mercy mission this time. Several transmissions were beamed to this ship by Rebel spies. I want to know what happened to the plans they sent you. What good is a reward if you ain’t around to use it? Besides, attacking that battle station ain’t my idea of courage.
